It started as a rumour but finally it has been confirmed that 30 Cherokee Jeeps will be given to the Black Stars and the technical team for placing second at the recent 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Jeeps reportedly cost an estimated $2.5m.(about $77,000 each), according to media reports. But the timing of the announcement has come at a time many Ghanaians have questioned GNPC’s decision to pay $25,000 bonuses to the Black Stars players, technical team and management for their performance in Equatorial Guinea.
In that particular instance, that announcement done by President Mahama with government moving quickly to deny any involvement in the payments later on.
The President did indicate other corporate entities were interested in rewarding the team for their spirited performance at the AFCON.
Weeks later, the Chief Executive Officer of Tanink
Ghana Ltd, Mr. Roger Klogo has told myjoyonline.com his company’s
donation was a redemption of a long-standing promise made by Tanink
Ghana to the Black Stars and has nothing to do with government.
“I want to say Tanink did present all those cars to the Black Stars
and we did it together with our partners but without any government
involvement. No government involvement at all,” he emphasised. He added, “Some of the partners paying for some the cars said that they will only come on board on condition that the duties on the cars were exempted and of which I contacted Government and Government agreed to grant the exemption hence we went ahead to redeem the promise though they came home with silver.”
According to myjoyonline, Mr. Roger also hinted that, he will mobilise his partners again in the future to present the stars with their Maserati brand of cars should they win the next AFCON or reach the semi-finals in Russia.
From a business point of view, why will a luxury car retailer company spend an estimated $2.5m on the Black Stars even though they are not official sponsors of the team? It beats my imagination.
Plus, Tanink Ghana made no promises to the Black Stars prior to the AFCON so this decision was only made after the tournament.
We have also been told that government waved duties on the cars. But this does not really make business sense unless there is some other transaction between government and Tanink Ghana LtD that we are not privy to.
You might want to keep a close tab on government’s expenditure on cars for a while now to find out more…
